GM to end contract with Fremont's New United Motor Manufacturing Inc In a move that could spell the end of auto manufacturing in California, General Motors Corp. said today that it would terminate its relationship with the last vehicle plant in the Golden State after failing to come to an agreement with Toyota on what car to build there. The plant, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., or NUMMI, is based in Fremont and has been run as a joint venture with Toyota since 1984. Currently, Toyota makes the Corolla compact sedan and the Tacoma pickup at NUMMI, while GM makes the Pontiac Vibe hatchback. Earlier this month GM said it would end production of the Vibe in August as part of its plan to eliminate the Pontiac brand, and Tom Pyden, a GM spokesman, said the two automakers had not been able to select a vehicle to produce in its place that would satisfy both automakers.
